Book recommendation — The Door-to-Door Bookstore

Cookie Boyle

Another book about book lovers

By Carsten Henn

Clearly I have a thing for books about books and the impact they can have on us. So when I saw this book on the shelf, I knew it was coming home with me.

First published in Germany, I read the novel in English translation.

“It has been said that books find their own readers — but sometimes they need someone to show them the way.” And so begins this charming novel.

In a small town in southern Germany, Carl Christian Kollhoff delivers books to his cherished customers, walking through the picturesque alleys of the city. Each customer has a story, and each book he delivers is precious to him and its reader.

Enter Schascha, a precocious nine-year-old girl who begins to accompany him on his rounds. Her inquisitiveness and his reluctance test their understanding of each other.

Through their bumpy but burgeoning friendship, the reach of this unlikely duo extends far beyond their own discussions to impact those they meet with their deliveries.

The Door-to-Door Bookstore reminds us that it’s by choosing to walk down a different alley that we have new experiences.

If you are looking for a charming novel about those who love books, consider The Door-to-Door Bookstore by Carsten Henn.
